Hurhur check out Tan Yek Keak's "Of boys and men" in Life! today.

Actually i wonder if the title is a variation of "Of mice and men"? But there's no link to his article. Or maybe it's just a simple original albeit a bit boring title.

Anyway, what caught my attention was the smallest of 3 pictures, a square box of this very familiar face and he's caressing a model of the human heart in his hands. Ok actually i'm a bit disappointed that the part on House was only about 1/6 of his whole article, and actually today for the first time, i noticed the links from show to show were rather awkward and lame. Hmmm.

Anyway,
"Let me tell you that five seasons on about a group of dogged diagnosticians investigating mysterious ailments, if you ever need further empirical proof that one man can make a show, look no further than the funny and brilliant Hugh Laurie as House."
Actually i disagree with this one, and think this horribly undermines people like Robert Sean Leonard (as Wilson) and Lisa Edelstein (as Cuddy). Wah lau eh. :(

And this one leads to my favourite line in his article. HAHAHA!
"Watch this show and maybe look for signs that cast member Kal Penn (wacky Kumar from cinema's Harold And Kumar) as low-key Dr Lawrence Kutner will leave the series in a rather shocking manner (the episode will be aired here on July 20 on AXN).

I just read that Penn, a real-life activist, will be working for the Obama administration as a liaison officer. Which means Kumar is leaving the Nut House for Obama in the White House.

I have waited a long, long time, i tell you, to be able to say this."

HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA OMG YES HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA YES THAT IS WHY I WILL WANT TO BE A JOURNALIST/WRITER TOO. HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAAH TO SLIP IN LINES LIKE THAT. HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA i really laughed out loud when i read it. Hurhur... Not his best lah, but still good. I feel like emailing him to tell him that i appreciated this, hahaha!

Anyway as highlighted by Audrey, there is also an interesting article on page A28 titled "The end of philosophy"
A good point was the (lack of) correlation between moral reasoning and proactive moral behaviour, HAHAHAAHAHA! Very true! This is probably why despite being in a so-called civilised, educated and on-the-moral-high-ground society, our people are still like that - intermittently gracious/ungracious (depending on whether you view the glass as half-full/half-empty), mostly bourgeoisie plagued by the gray life, and always uniquely Singaporean-ly kiasu and kiasi.

Sometime last week when i was on my way to Bugis MRT after work, i encountered this incident - an elderly uncle, looks about 60-70 even, was unsteadily riding his bicycle laden with his random barang + a stack of cardboard precariously strapped to this self-rigged storage styrofoam box behind his seat. So the cardboards were sticking out laterally, and the middle-aged guy walking ahead of me knocked his shoulder against the uncle's contraption which was holding all his cardboards together. So the bicycle swayed, the cardboards fell, the uncle stumbled and hastily stopped, and the man walked on, while looking back and giving the uncle dirty looks of why-did-YOU-bang-into-ME!? When i went up to help the uncle pick up the cardboards and strap them back on again, he was angrily muttering in Mandarin+Hokkien (i think?) about the asshole who knocked into him, and was still muttering as i left him.

Haii. What to do? Except whatever i can do, to help things better. Because i cant make that man come back to apologize, i cant make him help, i cant make the other passers-by stop to help as well. Hmmm. Anyway i was surprised by the weight of his bicycle. It was heavier than it looks, and looking at him (he was rather skinny and frail-looking) and thinking that he's doing this everyday... Wow.

Anyway ok here's a joke about philosophy which Liyan found when she was looking through Math/Science/Academically-related jokes online on Friday.

-----
One evening Rene Descartes went to relax at a local tavern. The tender
approached and said, "Ah, good evening Monsieur Descartes! Shall I
serve you the usual drink?". Descartes replied, "I think not.", and
promptly vanished.

It has never occurred before and it will never be repeated. At midnight it will end, quietly, suddenly, totally. Forever.
But the hours between now and then are opportunities with eternal possibilities."
