SIS GCO
7:04 p.m. @ Monday, Feb. 23, 2009

Went for an interview for SIS GCO - stands for Singapore Indoor Stadium Guest Care Officer (ie, ushers) - this afternoon. Left office at 2.45pm and reached SIS at about 3.30pm, took bus 67 then changed 11, at Kallang there. But i missed my stop. ARGHHHHHH!!

I took 67 from outside Broadway Hotel, and no offense intended here, but seriously the Indian commuters are not the friendliest people around. I was shoved aside by this woman (the 67 was rather packed) and the men just rushed ahead. Zzz I WAS IN THE QUEUE FIRST?! Wah lau eh. Then i was supposed to drop at Aft Lor 1 Geylang, which was 1 stop after Kallang Stn, which i thought would be obvious. And i was wrong. Suddenly i noticed "LOR 3 GEYLANG" then IT STARTED INCREASING IN LIKE GEOMETRIC PROGRESSION AND I QUICKLY ALIGHTED AT THE NEXT STOP, AND ENDED UP ON LOR 17 GEYLANG.

It was a one way road and i am totally unfamiliar with the area, so no choice, have to backtrack 2 stops, so in the middle of this drizzly day, i was traipsing through Geylang. I passed a lot of fruit stalls, though.

Got onto 11 and reached SIS rather uneventfully. Actually i realize it is rather convenient from MMI, if i do get the job and the timings are compatible at like 7pm.

I was smsing Sirui throughout but she didnt check her phone. WHY, DO PEOPLE HAVE HANDPHONES BUT DONT CHECK THEM?! Zzz anyway very luckily and nice-ly (as in, it was a nice feeling, that i wont be odd and alone) she waved to me as i was approaching the Admin Office, and after signing in, i realized i'm the 7th in line. And then we realized it's a group interview, coz 3 people were called in at the same time, and according to the sign-in list, Sirui would be next, but we have 2 people in between us.

But once again, very fortunately, somehow the 2 in between us didnt want to go as yet, so Sirui and i got called in together, plus this other guy who had been chatting on his phone throughout the about-30min wait, and during our chatting, Sirui pointed out that his phone is the LG Ice Cream phone that she wants.

I wasnt feeling particularly nervous or jumpy when we were waiting for the guard to lead us in, and even throughout the interview, i was feeling rather, pedestrian. Which was probably why i think i'm a very boring interviewee. Shitttt.

As compared to Jerald's SWU interview, this interview was definitely more friendly, and less strict, though ironically this is supposed to be more formal and all, the 3 interviewers were men, about 25-40years, and they wore those office-wear shirts and had our application forms printed out and laid out on the table. AND. HAHAHA i didnt mention it to Sirui, but i was mulling over what's a fun fact that i can say about myself, in case they ask? (Because that is definitely a question i'll ask if i were an interviewer) Then i couldnt think of any, then i started thinking "Ok i hope they wont ask that,"

And bingo, "Alright, let's have some self-intro, and tell us a funky fact about yourself" K he said funky. Omg i just dictionary.com-ed it and the first definition is "–adjective, funk⋅i⋅er, funk⋅i⋅est.
overcome with great fear; terrified." HAHAHAHAHA. Anyway, Sirui started first and talked about travelling and Korean dramas and Chinese painting. Then i got tongue-tied.

It's actually not easy to say a fun fact about yourself, during a job interview. Should i say, i like to facilitate events and be the person able to help, when people need help? A bit too suck-up for the job right. Anyway i thought of this only on the way home.

So adding on Sirui's thread of "Entertainment Interests", i said i like to watch TV and i like House (also rather freudian actually, since i was so high about it last night) At this point, the youngest of the 3 of them, this guy called Kenny, gave a contorted look. :(
Then there was this Alan Tam poster on the wall, and i got inspired and
Me: I like oldies, i like old Cantonese songs... :)
Guy2 (btw i think he looks like the HC math teacher Mr Ng who reminds me of Kuo): Ok name one old song!
Me: Ah... (thinking: SO MANY! WHICH ONE WHICH ONE HMMM!)
Me How old?? :D
Guy2: 80s!
Me: AAH. 1990 can? (thinking: AAH 相逢何必曾相識! I can offer to play it from my phone. If it's not overkill.)
Guy2: TV Drama one!
Me: AAH... (thinking: DIE.)
Me: 当年情! (thinking: TOTALLY, ANYHOW. Was it from 义不容情?? I think it's quite old right) [Ok just googled. HAHAHA it was from 英雄本色 1986. WOOHOO I ROCK!]
Guy2: Ok!
Me: LESLIE CHEUNG! :) He's one of my favourites too.
Then they kinda lost interest in my Entertainment Interests.

Then moved on the LG-Ice-Cream-phone dude. Who turned out to be Korean. HAHAHAHAHAHAHA! Actually when the guard was calling him name, it was suspicious already. Yong Sang Ryun. And anyway no one could really replicate-pronounce it the way it so effortlessly and smoothly rolled off his tongue. So throughout the interview he wasnt mentioned by name HAHAHAHA! But HE TURNED OUT TO BE A DAMN FUNNY PERSON. HAHAHAHAHAHAHA and it was nice that all 3 of us were the same age. He's also 19, and came to Singapore 9 years ago, but at age 10, he joined P3, and took PSLE in a neighbourhood primary school (he got into this excited talk about how he dislikes International School coz the Caucasians and [in his words] "niggers" are racist against yellow-skinned people, and he likes Singapore coz majority of us are yellow-skinned. HAHAHAHAHAHA) and just took his O levels last year. Now waiting for entry to Ngee Ann Poly. He was really chatty, and like Sirui said, it's rare to meet someone so forthright and honest. HAHAHA we met him at the bus stop when we were leaving, and took bus together to City Hall MRT.

Along the way, listening to the way he speak, is really, really SUPER FUNNY.
When asked about whether he likes Singaporean food,
Him: Eat the same thing every day also sian right?! (at this point, both Sirui and i yelped in amused surprise at his use of the word "sian" HAHAHAHA)
Him: You eat chicken rice everyday, not sian meh?
Me: Then how about your kimchi??
Him: Eat kimchi everyday also sian.
Then talking about how he got to SIS,
Him: I took cab.
Sirui: Yah i also took cab.
Him: This place is so ulu!
Me: HAHAHA but there got bus! I took bus here. :)
Him: You know that Kallang ice-skating place? There's shuttle bus, but it's shit. That shuttle bus never comes.
He: You wait for so long, then everybody take cab. Then later you see the shuttle bus beside you. (i think he means when you're on the cab on the way there, then you see the shuttle bus on the road beside the cab)
Him: *mutters under his breath* Sucks...
HAHAHAHHAHAHA OH YAH I JUST REMEMBERED SOMETHING. HAHAHAHAHA he was holding his umbrella (it was raining) and using it to gesticulate wildly on the bus, and then i suddenly remembered,

I left the umbrella that i borrowed from MMI, at the security counter at Indoor Stadium. HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHHAHAHAHAHAHA SHIT IT MAN. Haii. I KNEW IT, MAN. Damn it. :( Didnt go back to take, coz it was too mafan.

Anyway. OMGGG DIGRESSION. Ok back to the interview. The pay isnt fantastic, actually ok it's honestly reasonable, but once again, it's not something you'd do to earn a quick buck. There's transport fare, for Jurong East it's $16, Sirui at YCK also gets $16, Sang Ryun at Tampines gets $13. And all 3 interviewers also admitted that they know it's prob not enough, considering surcharge and all. But there's nothing anyone can do about it. HAHAHAHA. Man, sometimes you dont know what to do with honest interviewers/employers.

Job scope is simple, yes essentially ushering, plus handling of complains/people/random shit. When we went in, other than our application forms on the table, there were also 5 coloured paper labelled A to E on the table, and expectedly, it was like a scenario question and they observed our response.

I got a situation in "Eason Chan concert 2008" HAHAHA when i started, i said "Hurhur i was there," Anyway it was about someone complaining that the person next to him, has been blowing his whistle non-stop and is thus disturbing his enjoyment of the concert. And, btw i just found out today, that whistles are apparently not allowed in the stadium.
So i said ok i will speak to the person, and confiscate his whistle.
HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAH then turned out we're not supposed to confiscate it, but only to tell them (lamely, imo) to keep it in their bags.
Then Guy1 asked "What if he says, those people are also blowing what, why i cannot blow? What are you going to do about them?"

Seriously, i cant imagine how that is going to look, coming out from a conscious, average-IQ adult man. If i could have it my way, i would tell him "Even if other people are all doing it, it doesnt mean it's right." which would be all lyrical and stupidly idealistic, which will not help the situation.

So i just replied "Hm ok i cannot give a satisfactory answer. :(" Then they moved on to Sang Ryun.

Hm. At the end of it, they were talking about a training course on 7 March, and that we have to work 3 events with them, we will be paid, but only if we complete all training+first 3 events, then the pay will be released at the 3rd event. And afterwards, paydays on 15th and 30th of the month.

Actually i think their interview was really very kind. Maybe SWU just gave me a very tough start. I was musing to Sirui that they could have used the pay thing as a "test", to see how we would ask about it and so find out our motivations for the job.

Anyway, so far it sounds like we got it for sure right. Then they said, ok so results of interview out on Monday, you will get a call, blahblah. Then i was thinking, Shit, maybe i should have asked 'So does that mean we're in?' before he said that. Then from their response we can tell how are our chances? Actually i think our main advantage is that we are young. And from my pov, hm i think the interview was at worst mundane. But definitely not a 3-votes-NO kind of situation.

Towards the end Guy3 (afterwards Sirui and i both agreed we think he's a smoker. There was this stale smell of cigarette smoke from clothes in the room) asked "So, you all are usually more bubbly one lah izzit? Are you 2 quite close?" Coz at the start after Sirui's self-intro, i volunteered the information that we are actually exclassmates and good friends.

But anyway, i was thinking about this on the train home, it's so weird to ask something like "So you're usually more bubbly?" When he specify this expectation or this "tag" (ZOMG MMISPEAK. HAHAHA liyan will understand. Argh.) you will naturally be contained in this mental self-consciousness, "Ok so is this bubbly enough for you??" I dunno, ok that's what i feel. And it's also weird and infinitely fake, to volunteer info like "Yes i'm bubbly." HAHA ok it would be funny, to say that in Ktay-deadpan and Ktay-sian/straight-face. OK SIRUI I KNOW YOU'RE THINKING THIS, that i can do it in a similar if not completely identical fashion. Zzz.

OK I HAVE BEEN LONG WINDED ENOUGH.

(If you're interested in the pay/more details, to console yourself with your current job or to regret not applying for this after i have so painstakingly and thoughtfully and meaning-well-ly sent out the email to you all, you can talk to me on msn or something. I dont think i should reveal here? AH I AM SO PROFESSIONAL.)
